Orientation teams from SJC Brooklyn and SJC Long Island met Tuesday at the Fox Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York, for training before the next freshman class arrives on campus next week.
“Both the Brooklyn and Long Island campuses had a great experience at our training,” SJC Long Island Orientation Team Leader Xanthia Zoe said. “We were able to work together, enhance our leadership skills and most importantly, have fun!”
The orientation team members heard from outside speaker and author Bert Gervais, who led the groups in team-building exercises to strengthen their relationships and improve their ability to work as a team.
The day’s activities included team relay, which involved students dividing into smaller groups to work under pressure and complete timed tasks; mingle poker, an exercise that asked students to pick cards from a deck and treat others based on the value of the card they picked; and an orientation day skit, where members acted out what they think is important to tell new students.
“Bert Gervais did an amazing job showing us how to make the first-year students feel welcomed and how to prepare them for their first day of college,” Zoe added.
