One day, you’re a freshman in high school only focused on getting through the next four years. Then, before you know it, you’re a freshman in college trying to prepare for the rest of your life, but you’re not even sure how to do that because you haven’t even decided on what you want to major in.
Well, the Director of the Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development Jennifer Rooney is here to tell you that’s okay. Below, Rooney offers five tips on picking the major that’s right for you.
1. Choosing a major does not equate to choosing your future.
Go with something that you feel you are good at, interested in and want to learn more about.
The Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development has a new program to help students uncover their interests and how they could relate to careers and majors: Focus 2. Meet with a counselor to discuss your interests, skills, values and goals.
2. Educate yourself on the majors available here at St. Joseph’s College.
You may find that there are opportunities you were not aware of here.
3. Then attend our Meet the Majors event.
Pick two majors at SJC Long Island that sound like they may be of interest to you, and attend our Meet the Majors event to find out more about those programs. This year, the event is Wednesday, Oct. 16, during Common Hour. Interested in more than just two majors? Set up meetings with the chairs of each department you’re interested in to figure out what pick is right for you.
4. Get involved on and off campus.
Investing time into organizations, clubs and volunteering is a great way to learn more about yourself.
5. Undecided is not bad word.
I prefer the term exploratory, as it gives you more options to uncover new interests and learn more about yourself. Your path is there, you just need to become involved in the process.
