SJC Brooklyn’s Department of Physical Sciences will partner with the New York Section of the American Chemical Society on Saturday to host their 24th annual high school poster session. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on campus in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium.
Research projects undertaken by nearly 100 young minds in the five boroughs will be showcased. Judges from both academia and the private sector will evaluate the posters and the research, and four students will be selected as winners.
“Every year, we partner with the American Chemical Society to open our doors to high school students so that they can showcase their work among peers in a scholastic setting,” said Raymond D’Angelo, interim executive dean and professor of sociology at SJC Brooklyn. “It’s a true delight to see the beginnings of the next generation of scientific inquiry, curiosity and discovery emerge at this event.”
Dr. Daniele Musumeci, associate professor of chemistry at CUNY York College, will present the keynote lecture, “Poorly Water-Soluble Drugs and Strategies to Improve Their Solubility,” at the free event.
About 90% of current drug candidates in the research and development pipeline have low water solubility and risk to fail due to solubility problems. The seminar will give an overview of the strategies pharmaceutical scientists are employing to improve oral solubility, with a particular focus on supersaturating drug delivery systems.
