A ‘Random Act of Art’

SJC Long Island students, faculty and staff both on and off campus were treated to a surprise chalk mural Tuesday, Oct. 6, by artist Bryan Landsberg. The “Random Act of Art,” sponsored by the Council for the Arts, was created to help bring some smiles to the College community.

Those on campus yesterday could see the art come to life while Landsberg worked on his mural in the quad, right in front of O’Connor Hall. Students learning remotely yesterday had the opportunity to tune in on the St. Joseph’s College Council for the Arts Facebook page, where Malzone was streaming it live.

Landsberg, who has loved painting, drawing, sculpting and creating since he was a child, said that he likes working with chalk because of how temporary it is.

“It’s kind of liberating to just be able to create something quick, and then whatever happens to it, happens to it,” said Landsberg, whose work yesterday offered his interpretation of the Mona Lisa. “You don’t have to worry about that legacy that it might leave behind.”

Members of the College community should keep their eyes peeled for more upcoming “Random Acts of Art” on campus this semester — you never know when or where they’ll pop up!
