St. Joseph’s College graduate Sandra Lindsay ’99 — the Long Island nurse who last month became the first person in the country to receive a COVID-19 vaccine — will be featured as part of President Joe Biden’s Inauguration Day gala virtual programming.
The SJC Brooklyn alumna will be among a group of featured everyday Americans doing extraordinary things for their communities during the pandemic. Lindsay, an ICU director at Northwell Health’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center, will represent the contributions and sacrifices of healthcare workers nationwide for this celebration, and she will introduce two celebrity performers.
Lindsay, 52, said her Inauguration appearance came as part of a request Biden’s Inauguration committee made to Northwell Health.
“I am proud, grateful and humble to be the first recipient of the vaccine, to have made a difference and to represent healthcare workers nationwide on this occasion,” she said. “I’m excited and honored to be a part of this. Three months ago, I never would have thought I would be part of an event like this and be on the center stage.”

Lindsay, who received her two vaccination shots on Dec. 14 and Jan. 4, said her appearance during the Inauguration programming is an “opportunity to let the world know about the work of healthcare workers and the sacrifices they made.”
“It’s an extraordinary and wonderful experience for me,” she added.
The special airs live on Wednesday, from 8:30-10 p.m. on a number of network and cable television stations and stream live on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and other platforms.
