SJC Long Island students are sending a little bit of sunshine to pediatric patients.
Project Sunshine, a student-run club, assembled 100 “Sending Sunshine” basketball craft kits during common hour Nov. 8 for pediatric patients. The kits were provided by a national organization under the same name that aims to bring happiness to pediatric patients across the United States.
Club president Taylor Hanscom will send the newly assembled kits back to the national organization, which will then distribute them to hospitalized patients.
The kits included a journal, colorful markers, a foldable basketball hoop to hang on their door (plus small ball to shoot hoops with), a sheet of foam letters, a brochure stocked with activities and a special Teleplay postcard.
Hanscom, a senior nursing major, said she loves volunteering with Project Sunshine and is grateful to be back on campus, taking part in service activities with her friends again. Last year, during the pandemic, she made “Sending Sunshine” kits at home to donate with her family.
“I’ve always been interested in helping pediatric patients,” said Hanscom, a member of the Project Sunshine club since she was a freshman. “These kits are a great way to give them a sense of normalcy during a difficult time.”
