It happens every school year. You just shook off the last lingering sense of summer and are finally getting into the college routine. You’re cruising along in October when suddenly you feel it — a strain on your mental wellbeing. A creeping sensation lurking inside the classroom. Peering into your soul.
It’s the dreaded midterm.
Often worth half your final grade, your midterm results can set the course for the rest of your semester. But we’re here to help.
Here are Ten Tips to help you ace your midterms:
10. Get a good night’s sleep.
Unplug the internet and put your iPhone on silent when you go to bed. You might finally get four hours of uninterrupted slumber.
9. Study hard!
Don’t be lulled into that false sense of security that you only need to study half as hard because it’s “just a midterm.”
8. Take naps.
Researchers report that an hourlong nap improves memory performance fivefold. Two naps? Well, you do the math.
7. Exercise.
One 30-minute session of cardio will send extra blood to your brain and increase your brain power.
6. Organize a group study session.
But be flexible. Remember, it’s autumn! The leaves are changing, pumpkin-infused everything is on sale and doughnuts are warmer and taste better in October. Your study pals have a lot of other options.
5. Seasonal coffee with pumpkin whipped cream … ahhh, sipping from heaven.
Starbucks may be bringing back its special edition pumpkin spice whip for a limited time. Don’t feel guilty if you need to interrupt study time in order to experience this glorious treat — it’s totally worth it.
4. Take a walk.
Feeling overwhelmed? Take a walk! A simple stroll will boost your mood and give you energy.
3. Hydrate
Nutritional experts recommend eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily. Lack of adequate hydration can cause problems with focus, memory and brain fatigue.
2. Outline Your Week
Develop a study plan and lay out your schedule to streamline your hours. Study and break intermittently, so you don’t get too overwhelmed.
1. Have Fun!
You’re only young once. When study time is done, get together with your friends and enjoy yourself.
