St. Joseph’s University, New York President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph. D., is set to perform music of the great Austrian composer Franz Schubert at the Long Island Campus on Thursday, April 20, and at the Brooklyn Campus on Tuesday, April 25.
Both performances are part of the University’s Spring Concert Series and will occur during Common Hour, beginning at 12:40 p.m. A classically trained pianist, Dr. Boomgaarden conducts a recital at both campuses each spring and performs music at numerous other University-related events throughout the year.
On the Long Island Campus, “Waltzes and Songs from the City of Dreams: Franz Schubert’s Vienna” will take place in the Muriel and Virginia Pless Center for Performing Arts, while the Brooklyn Campus event will be inside the Tuohy Hall Auditorium. Both events are free and open to the public.
Dr. Boomgaarden will perform two famous Impromptus (Op. 142, No. 2 in A-flat and Op. 90, No. 2 in E-flat) by Franz Schubert, as well as Franz Liszt’s Soirées de Vienne – a virtuosic transcription of several of Schubert’s most beloved waltzes for piano.
On Long Island, Anna Malzone, director of the Council for the Arts and a senior lecturer, will perform as a guest soloist. St. Joseph’s Veronica Kaninska, M.S.Ed., C.T.R.S., an assistant teaching professor of recreation and leisure, will serve as a guest soloist during the Brooklyn event.
Furthermore, Dr. Boomgaarden will discuss the historical context of Schubert’s works and musical style. He will also speak about his time in Vienna as a Fulbright scholar and guest professor at the University of Salzburg.
