Coach Bob Vlahakis and the women’s lacrosse team at SJC Long Island will host the team’s fifth annual Veterans Day High School Girls Lacrosse Clinic and Showcase at the Outdoor Field Complex on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 8:30 a.m.
More than 125 girls lacrosse players from across Long Island will participate in clinics and compete in seven-on-seven scrimmages during the Danzi Stadium event that pays tribute to local veterans.
The festivities will include a special honor for the veterans in attendance, during which the lacrosse players gather at midfield and form a canopy tunnel using their lacrosse sticks. The honorees will then slowly march through the tunnel while being slowly introduced one-by-one by Coach Vlahakis. Local veterans are encouraged to attend the event.
“It always feels great to be able to make a day all about those who sacrificed many of their days for our country,” Meaghan Haber, a senior with SJC Long Island’s women’s lacrosse, said after participating in last year’s event. “Seeing the smiles on the vets faces as they walk down the makeshift tunnel really reminds me how important it is to show how much we appreciate them and their service.”
The event, which includes a luncheon on-site for the veterans, concludes at 1 p.m. Those interested in being part of this special day should contact Coach Vlahakis at 631.821.1816 or rvlahakis@mac.com.
