Last year, for the first time, SJC Long Island broke the $30,000 threshold for its 2016 Relay for Life fundraiser. This year, it ups the stakes by $5,000, seeking to raise $35,000 by the end of its April 29 event.
At press time, contributions are hovering around the $20,000 mark. There’s still some time to go, so now is the time to donate!

Relay for Life is the largest student-led fundraiser of the year for SJC. Unfortunately, most of us know someone affected by cancer. Every relay celebrates survivors who overcame cancer, caregivers who’ve selflessly given their time and energy and those lost to cancer.
Proceeds raised from the event go to the American Cancer Society. All of the money goes to research, programs, testing and much more to help find the cure for cancer. Programs include Road to Recovery, where cancer patients receive rides to treatments from volunteers; Look Good. Feel Better., where women receive make up lessons and wigs to help them physically and mentally cope with the effects of chemotherapy; and The Hope Lodge, where cancer patients and their caregiver can stay for free during treatments so they are close enough to the medical centers.
