Rumors have it, you should mark your calendars for Thursday through Saturday, April 5 – 7.
SJC Brooklyn’s Chapel Players Dramatic Society will perform Neil Simon’s 1988 play “Rumors” in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium at 7 p.m., each day.
“The Chapel Players’ last three productions (“Carrie,” “The Laramie Project” and “Godspell”), while entertaining, dealt with serious and thought-provoking subject matters,” said Christian Lee Branch ’11, administrative assistant at SJC Brooklyn’s Office of Student Life and producer of this production. “In picking “Rumors,” the club wanted to offer something to incite laughter in the audience and offer them a fun night out.”
Plenty of Laughs
And this play guarantees just that. “Rumors” is a two-act farce about a dinner party gone wrong. One of Simon’s most acclaimed comedies, it begins with New York’s deputy mayor accidentally shooting himself in the ear. Dinner guests show up to celebrate he and his wife’s 10th wedding anniversary, and find the mayor unconscious. His wife is nowhere to be found. Through the confusion, guests try to cover up what they think happened. But nobody has any real idea about what transpired before they arrived.
“This is my theatrical debut as a Chapel Player,” SJC Brooklyn senior Sudesh Sukhoo, who plays the role of Ken Gorman. “My favorite part of being involved in Chapel Players is working with my cast and directors. They are so welcoming and dedicated to the production. I’ve developed close relationships with each of my cast members. We are able bring that chemistry that we’ve built on stage. I love that I get to mold the character myself and make choices that allow me to sprinkle my own personality on Ken.”
Been Around Since 1917
The Chapel Players is the oldest club in the history of SJC, forming in 1917 just a year after St. Joseph’s College opened in Brooklyn. Known then as the Dramatic Society, it’s first production was a hit. Proceeds from the performance went toward supporting the country’s armed forces serving in World War I.
More than just a club, the Chapel Players Dramatic Society is dedicated to bringing the joy and power of theatre to students by providing high-quality dramatic programming. It pledges to offer participants the chance to experience the excitement and rewards of the theatrical arts while developing poise, social skills, confidence and the ability to work with others.
Tickets purchased online range between $5 and $10. The price depends on whether you’re an SJC student, faculty, staff, alumni or a guest. Tickets purchased at the door range in price from $5 and $15.
