While students head out at the end of May to tackle summer excursions — be it internships, trips or employment – St. Joseph’s College administrators stay busy working to find new ways to improve the College.
As for Christine Murphy, SJC Brooklyn’s vice president for enrollment management, she has spent much of her summer presenting at conferences, speaking to other college administrators about steps in the college admissions process.
At the Slate Innovation Summit Presentation in Chicago on June 28 — a conference developed exclusively for higher education admissions personnel — Murphy shared ideas about using technology and social media to recruit students and build a new freshman class.
Earlier, at the New York State Association for College Admission Counseling annual conference on June 6 and 7, Murphy gave a presentation discussing how to work with students who are in the midst their college search journey. The audience at the summer conferences was mainly high school guidance counselors who would be guiding students through the college admissions process.
“They were a great group,” Murphy told OnCampus. “We had a full room, and it was incredibly collaborative.”
During the same conference, Murphy, who sits on the NYSACAC’s admissions practices committee, did a presentation about how to use NYSACAC’s resources. She explained that in addition to helping officials who navigate students through the admissions process, NYSACAC also does advocacy work in Albany, professional development projects throughout the state and makes admissions decisions and policy nationally for higher education institutions.
Conference Participation Builds Prestige
SJC President Donald Boomgaarden, Ph.D. said he is proud of his faculty for speaking at conferences and building up the prestige of St. Josephs College, explaining that Romeo Sanchez, the director of operations in SJC Brooklyn’s admissions department, also attended the Slate conference.
Sanchez led a presentation about the College’s student information system (SIS), which manages student transcripts, at the conference.
“A hallmark of every successful institution is that our leaders are constantly seeking to improve themselves,” Dr. Boomgaarden said. “Christine’s dedication and expertise is remarkable, and the fact that she and Romeo Sanchez were invited to speak at this important conference is a wonderful example of what she, and her team, have been doing to not only stay current with best practices, but to even become recognized experts in their field.”
