More than 200 new SJC Brooklyn students gathered Sept. 6 in the Hill Center for the College’s annual investiture ceremony – a 102-year-old tradition at St. Joesph’s.
Investiture marks the first academic event of the year for the freshman class, and is an opportunity for family members and loved ones to see their children make the leap to college life.

Students and faculty – including speakers President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., Dean Michael J. Hanophy, Ph.D. and Professor Joseph D. Ross, Ph.D. – donned caps and gowns during the ceremony as a symbol of their investment in the freshman class’ education for the next four years.
Dr. Ross, who teaches communications studies at SJC Brooklyn, shared some advice with the new students.
“I hope that you’re proud of being part of this community because we’re really proud to have you join us,” he said, standing at a podium in the Hill Center. “As you celebrate investiture, I absolutely encourage you to keep your eye on the prize.
“Think about graduation, think about a successful career, think about a purposeful and meaningful life. But I also encourage you to embrace and enjoy the journey along the way.”
