A lifelong commitment to service led Arnaldo Deliz to the biology department at SJC Brooklyn — his first stepping stone in a climb toward becoming a medical doctor.
“At a young age I was always keen to helping people,” said Deliz, who is wrapping up his freshman year at SJC Brooklyn. “When I see people in need, I help them out. Or if someone is working too hard, I try to help them and lessen their load.
“I always geared toward helping people over helping myself,” he added.
Deliz particularly enjoys his biology class, taught by Michael J. Hanophy, Ph.D., SJC Brooklyn interim executive dean. Especially when Dr. Hanophy’s lecture relates to the paramedic field.
“Every lecture with him is refreshing,” said Deliz, explaining that he likes when Dr. Hanophy shows how the materials learned in class will be useful in the students’ future careers.
Not only is Deliz an academic all-star in the Honors Program at SJC Brooklyn, the young scholar finds plenty of time to get involved on campus. He is the treasurer of the Philosophy Club and frequents campus events through the Student Leadership Experience (SLE) — a campus-based program that focuses on helping students develop leadership skills through a series of workshops, seminars and fun campus life events.
“Overall, the first year has gone really well,” Deliz said. “The Honors Program really helped a lot, especially in encouraging myself to take on extracurricular activities and get me to participate in events and college life.
“St. Joe’s is very familial; everyone is really close, and talks to each other,” he continued. “It’s very welcoming — especially when you want to make friends and connections within the College.”
