SJNY students had the unique opportunity to tour the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in Central Islip.
The tour began with a meet-and-greet session with U.S. Magistrate Judge James W. Wicks. The students then observed a naturalization ceremony, a moment made even more special as SJNY criminal justice student Abigail Murgatroyd was selected by Judge Wicks to lead the Pledge of Allegiance for the newly sworn-in U.S. citizens.
Following the ceremony, the group attended a sentencing hearing in the courtroom of Judge Gary R. Brown, gaining a deeper understanding of the federal sentencing process. The experience continued with discussions led by representatives from U.S. Pretrial Services, the United States Attorney’s Office and the Federal Defenders of New York. These sessions provided invaluable insights into federal prosecutions, court-appointed defense counsel, and intensive supervision programs.
The tour was both educational and inspiring, offering students a rare glimpse into the workings of the federal judiciary.
It was noted as the experience of a lifetime for students. To witness the naturalization of dozens of new U.S. citizens was inspiring and moving. All who attended won’t soon forget it.
