Teaching internationally was their dream. And they made it happen.
Alyssa Bosco ’15, M.A. ’17 landed a student-teaching job in Italy the summer after earning her master’s degree at SJC Long Island.
Emily Davies ’14 and Alyssa Patterson ’13 led a teachers’ training course for teachers in China, where they taught educators how to better teach English to their students.
U.S. Army veteran John Davis ’20 spent a summer teaching in Thailand and Cambodia — an opportunity that led him to send 1,500 books to a school in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
These are just a few of the stories of SJC Long Island alumni who have landed gigs teaching around the world.
A Brief Look at Their Time Abroad
“My biggest takeaway personally was that it’s okay to step out of my comfort zone,” Davies said of her experience teaching abroad. “This was so out of character for me, but I’m so happy I did it. It was an amazing experience.”
Bosco, who had never been away from home, took a big leap by going to Italy. And it paid off.
“My expectations were truthfully just to absorb as much as I could, and learn about education in another country,” she said. “My life will never be the same.”
Davis, a veteran who served in the U.S. Army, was inspired to supply the Cambodian children with a proper library after teaching there and seeing that the students had no real resources, but a strong desire to learn.
“I feel like it is my calling to work for quality and relevant equal educational opportunities for all,” said Davis, who is pursuing a master’s degree in international education at Harvard. “Education can help prevent future conflicts, and education is often underserved where it is most needed and over-served where it is least needed.”
