Art students attending St. Joseph’s University, New York were treated to a private tour at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington, NY. The trip was a requirement for the University’s History in Photography course, led by Susan Van Scoy, Ph.D., an associate professor and chair of the art department at SJNY.
Dr. Van Scoy, who is on the board of trustees for the Heckscher Museum and serves as co-chair for its collection stewardship committee, helped arrange the private tour of the museum’s latest photo exhibition featuring the works of documentarist Berenice Abbott.
The exhibition, “Embracing the Parallax: Berenice Abbott and Elizabeth McCausland,” is comprised of 22 gelatin silver prints that span key points in Abbott’s life, coupled with the writings of her lifelong romantic partner and art critic Elizabeth McCausland.
After being taken on the curator-led tour, students were tasked with a writing assignment focused on one piece of their choosing from the exhibition.
In addition to studying Abbott’s work, students learned about the role of a museum curator, the type of training required and the choices that go into creating an exhibition.
