The ring of the classic Jeopardy! theme song filled the student lounge in Tuohy Hall on Monday afternoon, as SJC Brooklyn students celebrated Black History Month by playing their own version of the popular game show.
SJC Jeopardy! featured questions — created by the Black Student Association — that touched on varying black history topics: actors, classics, African-American firsts, quotes, the civil rights movement and sitcoms.
“”It went even better than we thought,” said Ahmbria Garner, a senior psychology major and president of the Black Student Association. She added that she felt the questions were at the perfect difficulty level for the six participants — not too hard and not too easy.
Kean Hawker, assistant director of student life, said the students used the acronym BLACKS — short for “beautiful legacy of accomplished, courageous, kind, souls — to decide what portion of black history to represent in the game’s questions.
“It’s always the students at the forefront of everything we do,” said Hawker, who coordinates multicultural activities for SJC Brooklyn students. “We came up with the idea together. We sat down, tossed around ideas, and discussed what part of black history we wanted to celebrate.”
The Black Student Association is celebrating black history throughout the month of February, hosting forums and special events, including a presentation from author Ron Howell. He will discuss his new book, “Boss of Black Brooklyn: The Life and Times of Bertram Baker,” in conversation with Ted Hamm, Ph.D., SJC’s chair of journalism and new media studies, on Wednesday, Feb.13 at 5 p.m. in Tuohy Hall’s student lounge. A Reggae Festival as the grand finale is planned for Feb. 26.
