Brooklyn Voices will begin its 2025 season on Jan. 7 with a reading and discussion celebrating the release of Liz Pelly’s new book, “Mood Machine: The Rise of Spotify and the Costs of the Perfect Playlist,” at St. Joseph’s University, New York.
Drawing on more than 100 interviews with industry insiders, Pelly’s book is billed as an unsparing investigation into Spotify’s origins and influence on music. It explores the inner workings of today’s highly consolidated and notoriously opaque record business.
The event, held in collaboration with the Greenlight Bookstore, will take place at SJNY’s Brooklyn Campus.
Joining Pelly on stage will be composer, educator and writer Max Alper (aka La Meme Young).
Brooklyn Voices Fall 2024
During the fall, three Brooklyn Voices events were held at SJNY. The most recent, on Dec. 12, featured author Ayana Mathis, winner of the Inaugural Gabe Hudson Prize. Mathis read from her book, “The Unsettled.” October’s event welcomed novelist Jeff VanderMeer, who discussed “Absolution: A Southern Reach Novel,” the fourth volume in his Southern Reach series. In September, the Brooklyn Campus hosted a sold-out event celebrating the 10th anniversary of “Station Eleven,” the 2014 novel by Emily St. John Mandel.
Next Up: Chris Hayes
The next Brooklyn Voices event, scheduled for Feb. 10, will feature Emmy award-winning TV host and New York Times bestselling author Chris Hayes.
Hayes will discuss his new book, “The Sirens’ Call: How Attention Became the World’s Most Endangered Resource.” This will mark Hayes’ second appearance in the Brooklyn Voices program. The host of MSNBC’s primetime show “All In with Chris Hayes” first spoke at SJNY in 2017.
In March, SJNY and Greenlight will host author Colum McCann.
