From their high school days at Christ the King in Queens to their college years at St. Joseph’s University, New York’s Brooklyn Campus, William “Billy” Haufmann and his wife Kristin (Healy) shared a journey that blossomed into a lasting love story.
The bond between the two 2006 graduates was forged through mutual respect and support, amid the backdrop of athletic pursuits and academic endeavors.
Attending St. Joseph’s as student-athletes at the same time played a pivotal role in strengthening their connection, providing a shared experience and a network of lifelong friends.
Now, as they approach their 10th wedding anniversary and 40th birthdays this April, the Haufmanns — now parents of two young children — reflect fondly on their time at St. Joseph’s, recognizing the role it played in shaping their lives together.
Kristin Haufmann provided the answers below in a candid Q&A session, that helped us delve deeper into their journey. But Billy Haufmann added a touching Valentine’s Day message about his wife, who he affectionately refers to by her maiden name. (It’s a sports thing.)
“Healy always thought of others before herself. She was always fun to be around and very active in school sports or events. She would always go the extra mile whether with sports or school. Healy is still the same way to this day and that makes me love her more and more every day. She is an amazing wife and awesome mother.”
Q&A with the Haufmanns
Q: Please talk about the moment you first met on St. Joseph’s University’s Brooklyn Campus:
A: We actually met in high school (Christ the King). I sat behind him in home room. And then we continued going to school together at St. Joseph’s.
Q: What were your initial impressions of each other during your time at St. Joseph’s? What do you think drew you together?
A: I thought he was hilarious, kind and very easy to talk to. He still is. He makes my kids and I laugh every single day. He has always been such a hardworking father/husband and will always lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it.
Q: Did attending the same university play a role in bringing you closer together/keeping you together? How did your shared experiences at St. Joseph’s shape your relationship?
A: I believe it did. Experiencing everything together was great. We will always have those memories to reminisce. We also have our lifelong friends who we enjoy catching up with every Alumni Day at St. Joseph’s. It’s great to meet up and relive our college years.
Q: Do you recall any memorable moments or traditions you shared on campus that strengthened your bond?
A: We didn’t really have any traditions, but we would attend each other’s games, which was nice because we were supportive of one another.
Q: Did you take any classes together, and if so, which ones and did they influence your relationship in any way?
A: Billy was a biology major and I was a business major. So the only class we had together was computer. Billy needed a lot of help in this class. Haha.
Q: Please share a favorite memory of your time together at St. Joseph’s?
A: We will always cherish our memories from St. Joe’s. There are so many, I am not sure if I can choose one. Between going to each other’s games, doubleheader days, parties, formals, March Madness, Alumni Day, tournaments, championships and hanging out with our teammates after school.
Q: What was your favorite lunch spot when you were students?
A: Our favorite lunch spot was Graziella’s. They have the best chicken parm!! Graziella’s had an unbeatable lunch special for us college kids. They opened up while we were attending St. Joe’s. We enjoy going back there for Alumni Day. The owner/staff are all very friendly. Their food and drinks are still delicious!
