Sharing His Passion with Others
Thomas Lownds, a therapeutic recreation major with a minor in music, chose to pursue both areas because of his brother.
“Having a brother with an intellectual disability was definitely an inspiration to get into this field because I always felt the need to help people that can’t help themselves,” the Mount Sinai resident said. “Whether through music, art, games, or just having simple conversations with people, making them feel known and accepted for who they are is more than enough.”
After graduating, Lownds plans to study to become certified in therapeutic recreation before entering the field. Though he’s not sure exactly where he’ll end up, he has faith he will land in the right place.
“I’ll go wherever God takes me,” the 21-year-old said. “I mostly look forward to how I can take my love and passion for music to the next level, and being able to share that passion with others. That’s one of the many things I live for.”
No matter where his journey takes him, Lownds will take his desire to serve others with him.
“Service has been the definitive pillar of my time at SJC,” he said. “My love of service got me to do amazing things, like go on mission trips down south to volunteering at soup kitchens in the boroughs. I’m so thankful for the countless opportunities of service that Campus Ministry has granted me, and I’m also grateful for the many friends I made here. These are the things I’ll remember for a lifetime!”
