Known for providing college students with endless opportunities to learn and grow right here on Long Island, St. Joseph’s University, New York was the perfect fit for Vincenzo Buffolino ’25.
The Seaford, NY native was looking for a local university that would also provide him with the opportunity to play soccer at the collegiate level, so he enrolled at SJNY after high school and will graduate this May with a B.S. in Recreation, Sports and Park Administration from the Long Island Campus.
“When I receive my diploma at commencement, it will show that my endless effort the past four years has truly paid off,” said Buffolino.
The unique Recreation, Sports and Park Administration program at SJNY provides students with the skills to help others improve their quality of life, and graduate as wellness-experts with a diverse set of talents.
“I chose Recreation, Sports and Park Administration as my major because I am such an outdoor person and love doing recreational activities in my free time,” said Buffolino. “I also enjoy being engaged with the community and helping others. I truly believe recreation has such a strong impact in everyone’s lives.”
With the help of Gail Lamberta, Ph.D., associate dean for community development, professor and chair of recreation and leisure studies and coordinator of experiential learning at SJNY, Buffolino secured an internship at the Patchogue YMCA, which allowed him to turn the skills he learned in the classroom into hands-on experience. During his time as an intern, he was able to assist in running recreational programs and activities, as well as youth and adult fitness and sports programs.
“My internship experience allowed me to learn a ton of valuable lessons that will help me succeed in my field,” Buffolino explained. “St. Joseph’s helped me prepare for my internship because of everything I learned in my classes, especially from Dr. Lamberta and Professor Lorraine Lubicich (associate professor of recreation and leisure studies). They both set me up for success and I can’t thank them enough.”
Buffolino credits his parents as his main inspirations in life, encouraging him and his sister to be the best they can be. After he graduates, he will remain on staff at the Patchogue YMCA, in addition to his roles as a youth soccer coach for the Massapequa Soccer Club and staff member at Planet Fitness. He aspires to manage his own athletic or recreation facility in the future.
