The St. Joseph’s College community supported students in a 24-hour Giving Day fundraiser on Wednesday, raising nearly $72,000, which includes donations that came via the College’s Giving Day website and other gifts and pledges.
On the College’s third annual Giving Day, 556 donors gave $71,700 to support 13 separate fundraisers, which provide students with the means to have transformative experiences at SJC. The generous donations will help students make connections to their chosen professions, ensure access to state-of-the-art labs and equipment for research and hands-on learning, and assist with their everyday needs, like purchasing food and books.
The leading fundraiser, Student Emergency Fund (Tuition Assistance), garnered the help of 60 people, raising $7,060 by the end of the day — exceeding its goal by more than $1,000. The fund helps students who face the challenge of illness or caring for a family member to stay in school.
Flavio Bollag, SJC’s executive director of development, expressed his appreciation of the College’s donors.
“Once again, we are so grateful and inspired by the response and generosity of the whole SJC community,” Bollag said on Thursday. “Giving Day 2021 was a success because of the commitment of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents and friends, and I extend my appreciation and thanks to everyone.
He continued: “Giving Day is a great reminder of the power of philanthropy and the combined spirit of our broad community. We watched with a lot of excitement when we hit 300 donors in the afternoon, 400 donors in the evening, and then to reach 540 donors by the time I logged off late last night — it was amazing.”
SJC Student Success Supported on Giving Day
The generous donations helped St. Joseph’s meet nearly all of its goals.
The College surpassed its goals to fund a few scholarships, including the Dion Arroyo Scholarship ($6,135), SJC and Hope House ($4,265), Joseph Lewinger ’00 Scholarship for Future Educators ($4,185), Sisters of St. Joseph Scholarship ($2,400) and Professor John Skinnon Accounting Scholarship ($2,230).
The Giving Day fundraiser additionally supported the following projects:
- Microscopes for New Biology Lab ($4,800)
- Chalk & Wire Subscription for Child Study Majors ($3,840)
- SJC Long Island Food Pantry ($2,700)
- SJC Online Student Book Fund ($2,730)
- Student Trip with the Sisters of St. Joseph Pilgrimage to Le Puy, France ($2,585)
- Psyched for Student Psychology Memberships ($1,190)
- Practice IVs for Nursing Skills Lab ($2,575)
