SJC Brooklyn’s Book Club and the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) chapter are teaming up to donate books to children in need on International Book Giving Day.
The clubs are donating books to the preschool at the Guild for Exceptional Children (GEC), a Brooklyn-based nonprofit that provides services for children and adults with disabilities, explained Book Club President Angelina Stabile and NSSLHA President Sarah Jampol.
The clubs added books to donate to an Amazon Wishlist. Interested donors may make a purchase directly through the Wishlist, which will ship and deliver the book directly to the GEC preschool.
The clubs request all donations by Wednesday, Feb. 9, to ensure the GEC receives all the books by International Book Giving Day on Feb. 14.
The goal of International Book Giving Day is to get books into the hands of as many children across the world as possible on Feb. 14.
Spreading a Love for Reading
Jampol and Stabile said they look forward to supporting the GEC children through the book fundraiser. Their clubs worked together to compile the list of requested picture books — spanning from stories about family, celebrating different cultures, making friends, and more.
“As future speech pathologists, the officers and members of NSSLHA know how important reading is to the language development of children, which is why we are delighted to fundraise for International Book Giving Day,” said Jampol, a senior speech communication major. “NSSLHA will continuously do what we can in providing the opportunity for children to expand their understanding of themselves and the world. We invite you to help us support our friends at the Guild who work tirelessly to introduce and expand the minds of all ages.”
“I am so excited to have Book Club participate in this International Giving Day because I am an advocate for giving all students access to books,” added Stabile, a junior adolescent English education major. “The Guild for Exceptional Children is an awesome nonprofit that encourages the individuality and learning of important life skills for children, adults, and seniors with developmental disabilities.”
