More than 600 first-year and transfer students spent Tuesday getting acclimated to SJC Long Island at the campus’ Fall 2017 Orientation. With the superhero-focused theme, “Unmask Your Potential” students were encouraged by orientation leaders and SJC administrators to face their fears and live courageously.
“Learn to have courage,” said SJC President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., during the day’s welcome address. “Courage can be learned. Courage means not taking the counsel of your fears. Take courses, programs, whatever is necessary, challenge yourself each day. Take advantage of your experiences.”
A day that included a visit from Mr. Softee and complementary zeppolis and fried Oreos also boasted visits from Dr. Boomgaarden, himself a fresh face at the College. Also present were SJC’s Interim Executive Dean Wendy Turgeon, Ph.D., Vice President for Student Life Rose Mary Howell, Ed.D. and Bryan Gill, executive director of student involvement, leadership and multicultural programming.
“Ever wonder why graduation is called ‘commencement’ when you’re actually finishing something?” Dr. Turgeon asked the hundreds of students gathered in the Muriel and Virginia Pless Center for Performing Arts. “Well, what graduation really represents is commencing the next step in your life. And we’re so pleased that you’ll be doing it here at St. Joseph’s.”
After hearing from key SJC leaders, transfer and first-year students were given a tour of the SJC Long Island campus and facilities, while getting informed of the many services and opportunities available at the college, including study abroad, career counseling and much more.
Students were then gathered in the Danzi Center for a presentation by keynote speaker Bert Gervais, acknowledged by former President Barack Obama for his work as a young leader in America.
The day concluded with zip lining and assorted activities across the Danzi Knoll. Students addressed any lingering needs, such as receiving their student IDs and parking passes, all in preparation of the quickly approaching first day of school — a day that can be both exciting and nerve-wracking.
“College is difficult. This world is very complex and challenging,” Dr. Boomgaarden said. “The good news is St. Joseph’s has the tools to help you deal with all of those things.”
