The Long Island Campus’ Office for Tutoring, Academic Development and Student Accessibility Services is offering a new way for incoming students to acclimate to college life.
Developed for first-year and transfer students, the Transitions program will help students navigate their journey into higher education by providing a supportive network and environment.
“This program is designed to assist incoming students with realizing the importance of critical soft skills,” Victoria Ewart, transition specialist, said. “This helps them be more intentional in their learning path to realize their full potential.”
Starting in fall 2023, the program will offer such support services as weekly group meetings to build core academic and social skills, socialization activities, individual tutoring, and peer mentoring.

“Students who may need or desire a supportive and structured environment during this transitional period can truly benefit from this program,” said Ewart, who graduated from St. Joseph’s in 2022 with a degree in psychology. “They will work individually and in group sessions with a transition specialist whereby they will develop core competencies in academic habits, professional communication, and short-and long-term planning.”
Through her role, Ewart will help and support Transitions students by offering guidance as they navigate life at St. Joseph’s University.
“Working in the tutoring center, we often see students struggle most as they transition from the faculty-led high school support system to the more student-led support system,” explained Ewart. “We have an abundance of student supports available. However, it can be difficult at first for students to ask for help.”
Ewart said she is excited to explore this new way of interacting with students, faculty and staff.
“Engaging with students is such a rewarding experience,” she said. “Being able to connect with them on an academic and personable level has been extremely valuable.”
