SJNY Long Island’s Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development recently hosted an internship and job fair for students. With nearly 100 employers at the event, students were able to meet representatives from various organizations and fields of employment, including accounting, health care, law enforcement, finance and many more.
With numerous students in attendance, the fair allowed students to interact with employers in a professional environment, and learn about what kinds of jobs they could get after college.
“I am looking for jobs related to my major,” said Jacob Nitschman ’27. “I am also trying to network and get my name out there.”
While the fair is a perfect opportunity to look for jobs and future employment opportunities, it is also a great place to find volunteer opportunities as Ava Turnao ’28 did.
“I am looking for places to volunteer to earn my patient care hours for physician’s assistant school,” she said.
While it can be intimidating to approach employers and interact professionally for the first time, the organizations in attendance made students feel comfortable.
“Everyone I talked to was very friendly and knowledgeable about their companies, which made me feel less nervous talking to more people,” Turano said.
Taking advantage of these kinds of events, as Nitschman and Turano did, is one way to help yourself succeed in the future.
“Regardless of how you feel about it after, you did something that is a major step on your road to career success,” said Matt Skolnick, assistant director of the Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development. “The education at St. Joseph’s opens tremendous doors for students, but taking advantage of things like career fairs is a step through one of those doors and onto career success.”
