The SJC Brooklyn psychology department is shaping students into professionals ready to dominate the field.
Samantha Southard, a Class of 2018 graduate, said studying psychology helped her “come out of her shell” and discover her potential.
“At St. Joseph’s College, I was able to gain very comprehensive knowledge about the many different subdisciplines within psychology,” said Southard, a member of the campus’ Dance Team. “The professors that taught these classes were beyond amazing. Being at St. Joseph’s has truly prepared me for the future.”
Psychology majors at SJC Brooklyn typically carve out their own path, based on their interests — taking courses on neuroscience, social influence, motivation, human development, forensics, research design and more. Many students opt to participate in the College’s annual Research Symposium, where they have the opportunity to present their own research to the St. Joseph’s community.
Hui Liu, a 2019 graduate, said the psychology curriculum gave her the foundation she needed to continue her academic journey at graduate school.
“At St. Joseph’s, you are not just learning psychological knowledge and skills, but also applying them to real-life situations,” Liu said. “The professors not only teach you material but also care about you and support you in achieving your goals. Two important people I met are Professor Peter Lin and Professor Elizabeth Anslow. When I was confused about my future educational goals, they offered me thoughtful advice and warm support.”
