St. Joseph’s College students dressed in pink Sunday, Oct. 20, as members of clubs, athletic teams and Greek life took part in this year’s American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walks. Representing the College at both MCU Park and Jones Beach, the St. Joseph’s contingent helped raise awareness — and more than $10,000.
At Jones Beach, the SJC Long Island group joined thousands of other participants who walked for breast cancer research and helped raise more than $1.6 million. The group of students from Patchogue included the Theta Phi Alpha, Alpha Gamma Delta, Kappa Beta Gamma and Delta Phi Epsilon sororities; the dance team; and the women’s basketball team.
“We hold this charity event close to our hearts because many of our sisters have family and friends who have been affected by breast cancer,” Delta Phi Epsilon said in their Instagram post after participating in the walk. “This year, we raise(d) over $2,100 for the American Cancer Society! Thank you to everyone who donated, and we couldn’t be happier to see everyone support this cause!”
Over on Coney Island, SJC Brooklyn students joined walkers at the MCU Park, helping to raise more than $455,000 toward research. Among those representing SJC Brooklyn were the Beta Upsilon Delta sorority, SJC Diamonds and the Bears Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which included members of men’s volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s swim, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, tennis, softball, women’s basketball and cross country.
