St. Joseph’s University New York (SJNY) hosted annual blood drives on both campuses this semester in partnership with the New York Blood Center (NYBC) and Maimonides Medical Center.
The Brooklyn Campus Blood Drive was held in early February inside Tuohy Hall Auditorium. The drive was organized with Maimonides Medical Center. The Long Island Campus drive, which was held in March, exceeded its goals by collecting 51 pints of blood for NYBC.
SJNY hosts blood drives throughout the academic year since the need for blood is continuous.
“The need for blood is constant, and people can donate every two months,” said Kerry Vall, RN, an SJNY Blood Drive chairperson. Those who donate while in college often donate for life. If we can engage Students at this time of their lives, we can inspire a lifetime of this important Community Service, which ultimately benefits each and every one of us. This is particularly in keeping with St. Joseph’s University’s commitment to service, inspired by our founding Sisters of St. Joseph.”
Since there is currently no viable artificial product that can replace blood, it is so important that people donate, especially during this time of increased need.
“Every 2 seconds, someone needs blood. It can’t be made in a lab; we can only get blood from other humans. People should donate to keep our hospitals supplied. You never know when someone that you love might need this supply to save their life. During times of national disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornado outbreaks, the need for blood is extremely increased,” said Vall.
If you missed the blood drive, you can find local ways to donate on the NYBC website: https://www.nybc.org/.
“I encountered several students on Tuesday that told me that they did not have the time to donate on that day due to their schedules. We were able to refer them to a local drive near where they live, so they didn’t miss the opportunity to contribute. We told them to be on the lookout for our next “on Campus Drive” in September! You can donate blood every 56 days– that is why we have three Blood Drives per year,” said Vall.
