In the midst of graduation season, St. Joseph’s University, New York has bestowed one of its most prestigious honors, the Donald R. Boomgaarden Leadership in Action Award, upon two outstanding seniors who embody the institution’s motto: Esse non videri — “To be, not to seem.”
At the Brooklyn Campus, the recipient was Leandra Fernandez, a dedicated student majoring in Child Study. With a stellar 3.96 GPA, Fernandez’s academic prowess was matched by her unwavering commitment to service and leadership.
From her days as a freshman at the campus in Clinton Hill, Fernandez immersed herself in campus life, volunteering at the Dillon Center and earning the admiration of teachers and children. Her involvement extended beyond the classroom, as she assumed roles in various clubs and organizations, including the Pride Club and the Child Study Club.
Off-campus, Fernandez mentored ballet classes for students with special needs, embodying the essence of service and empathy.
Pileigh Shahinian, an English and Adolescent Education major who graduates with a perfect GPA of 4.0, received the award at the Long Island Campus. Shahinian’s academic achievements spoke volumes about her dedication and diligence.
Beyond her scholarly pursuits, Shahinian’s leadership shone brightly, as she founded the Creative Writing Club and became the group’s president, while also leading Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society.
Her commitment to service was evident in her involvement with BASIC, a Christian club on campus, and her role as an orientation team leader. Shahinian’s passion for education extended outside the classroom, as she served as a peer tutor and test proctor.
