The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has recognized the nursing program at St. Joseph’s College with the 2020 Exemplary Academic-Practice Partnership Award.
The Asthma Coalition of Long Island (ACLI) nominated St. Joseph’s College for the award for its partnership with the ACLI, and two other area colleges. The partnership strives to use evidence-based education and mobilization of community resources to improve access to care for school-aged children with asthma.
St. Joseph’s helps facilitate asthma self-management education in school districts with the most need. The College’s nursing students serve in these districts, receiving evidence-based education during community clinical placements.
The partnership’s practices are so successful that two regions in upstate New York with high numbers of asthma sufferers adopted its techniques, according to ACLI. The coalition nominated the group of colleges and universities for this award during a presentation at the 2020 AACN Academic Leadership Conference.
SJC Nursing Department Director Maria Fletcher, Ph.D., R.N., C.N.E., expressed how proud she is that St. Joseph’s received the award.
“Receiving the AACN’s 2020 Exemplary Academic-Practice Partnership Award along with Molloy, Farmingdale and the Asthma Coalition was a pleasant surprise,” she said. “We have been partners with the Long Island Asthma Coalition for many years. It has been a remarkable partnership providing valuable experiences for our students. To be recognized for this partnership is heartwarming.”
