As St. Joseph’s College switches to virtual and online instruction for the remainder of the semester to help prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), student support offices have started offering online services, as well.
“While I know that we may be faced with additional challenges in the coming days, weeks and even months, I know that the SJC community will pull together, as it always does, to support one another as we navigate these trying times,” St. Joseph’s President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., said.
St. Joseph’s aims to continue creating a strong feeling of community and support for all of it students, faculty and staff during this time. Below is a list of some of the offices that have started offering remote support for students.
Carry On Learning
The College put together a continuity guide to aide students as they begin preparing for remote learning. For a list of five tips to help you successfully participate in your online course, click here.
Libraries
Please visit SJC Libraries Remote Services & Support page for guidance on accessing library resources from off-campus. Library reference/information services are now available via the AskUs! Chat Service from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Career Preparation and Professional Development
The Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development continues to offer its services without requiring students to come to campus. The following are services available during this time:
- Schedule career center appointments via email or Google Hangout: Don’t miss out on appointments. These sessions can be hosted virtually or by phone. Go to Handshake to schedule an appointment. Once you’ve selected your appointment category and type, you’ll see an option to select your appointment medium in the upper right corner of your screen.
- Learn from your peers: Read more than 100,000+ employer reviews on Handshake to learn more about what it’s like to intern or work at a specific company. Or, use Peer Messaging to chat with alumni or other students with your major, or even to conduct informational interviews online.
- Fill out your online profile: Did you know that 80% of students who fill out location preferences, job role preferences and job type preferences receive a message from an employer? It’s a simple step, but a really effective way to start engaging with potential employers online.
- Follow employers you’re interested in: By following an employer, you’ll be alerted when they post an upcoming online event.
- Apply for jobs and internships: Upload resumes and cover letters directly in Handshake to apply to hundreds of opportunities.
- Interview preparation through Big Interview: To set up your Big Interview account, go to https://sjcny.biginterview.com and click “Register” Enter your school email address, name and password, and click “Create my Account.” You will receive a confirmation email. Click “Verify” in the email and you’ll be able to start using Big Interview. You can record your responses and have a counselor review them for you by sending them your personalized link to critique.
- MySJC Portal: Utilize all of the guides and resources available to you on the Office’s portal page.

PASS Tutoring (SJC Long Island)
When students cannot access campus, remote tutoring via FaceTime, Skype and Google docs allow staff and students to work on the same document simultaneously for visual and audio learning.
Specialists will provide written feedback to the director with the student’s name, the time they worked with them, what was accomplished in the session and what is pending.
Since the majority of our students have research papers due, discussion and Google docs will suffice as support. Students who have already gathered research will not need to visit the library.
If a student requests a campus visit, it will be on a case-by-case basis. The specialists will go to campus to meet the student in the Callahan Library. If a student is concerned about visiting campus, a specialist will meet you at a public library in a location with no reported COVID-19 cases in the area. As of today, these locations are:
- Babylon Public Library
- Sayville Public Library
- Connetquot Public Library
- Patchogue-Medford Public Library
Testing for Students with Disabilities
If you are a student and have not yet given your professor your accommodation letter, faculty can verify your accommodation via lbasilice@sjny.edu or adentebostinto@sjny.edu.
If the professor is giving an exam online, faculty should incorporate the following for both PASS and SAS students:
- Extended time for a timed assessment.
- In the event that the student needs a reader, the test should be available for 24 hours to log in (a family member can assist).
- The scribe accommodation can be done with the speech-to-text smartphone feature.
Accessibility students may need accommodation adaptations for their online classes. For example, a student may decide they no longer need a note-taking accommodation, as they can now replay Kaltura lectures, or another student may need more time on tests formatted to the online platform. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out as soon as possible to Lbasilice@sjny.edu and/or adentebostinto@sjny.edu (SJC Long Island) or kpercival@sjny.edu (SJC Brooklyn).
