St. Joseph’s University, New York students participated this October in helping raise awareness for breast cancer and further educated themselves on the cause.
Many St. Joseph’s students took part by attending the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks. The Making Strides walks took place across Long Island and New York City, including Brooklyn, Staten Island, Bronx, Queens and Manhattan.
The American Cancer Society has been hosting their annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks for three decades. The walks serve as a celebration of courage and hope as they provide support for breast cancer survivors.
Long Island students attended the Jones Beach Making Strides walk on October 20 and along with 77,000 other walkers who attended, they helped to raise $2.3 million dollars for breast cancer research and support. Attendees included student-athletes from the dance team, women’s lacrosse team and women’s basketball team, as well as members of Theta Phi Alpha and Delta Phi Epsilon sororities.
Members of Beta Upsilon Delta attended the Making Strides of Brooklyn Breast Cancer walk on October 27.
In total, the Theta Phi Alpha, Delta Phi Epsilon and Beta Upsilon Delta sororities raised $1,502 for breast cancer awareness foundations through their own fundraising.
Sydney Evans ’25, member of Delta Phi Epsilon, attended the Jones Beach Making Strides Walk. “This inspiring event not only raises funds for research and supports services but also fosters a sense of unity and hope among participants,” said Evans.
SJNY Athletic Teams Fundraisers
In an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer, Long Island’s Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC) hosted a flag football tournament on October 22. Attendees raised money for the cause while competing in a tournament-style game of flag football.
Long Island and Brooklyn’s women’s volleyball teams participated in their annual Dig Pink fundraiser games on October 23. The teams had a successful fundraiser and a successful game, with both teams walking away with winning victories.
