May 1 was a big day for a select group of St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY) students as they were inducted into the University’s various honor societies during a private luncheon. Hosted in the student center’s multipurpose room on the Long Island campus, the event commenced with a rendition of the national anthem performed by the SJNY Sharps before University President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., addressed the audience.
Dr. Boomgaarden commended the students on their hard work thus far and noted that college is not intended to be the best time in a person’s life, but rather a stepping stone to a fulfilling life of success and perseverance.
Lisa Tafuro, Ph.D., associate professor of the department of speech language pathology and chair of the honors committee, presented awards on behalf of institutional and national honor societies that included Gamma Tau Delta, Delta Epsilon Sigma and Kappa Gamma Pi.
Jason Ostrowe, Ph.D., assistant professor for the department of criminal justice, and Jacqueline Volpicella, LCSW, assistant teaching professor for the department of psychology, joined in recognizing students for their achievement. Along with their induction, students were presented with cords that corresponded with their respective honor societies to wear with their cap and gown during graduation.

SGA president Madison Frascogna ’25 (left) was presented with the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph Endowed scholarship and the Thomas, J. Wendt Alumni scholarship.
Madison Frascogna ’25, a mathematics adolescence major and president of the student government association, was presented with the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph Endowed scholarship and the Thomas J. Wendt Alumni scholarship.
The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph Endowed scholarship was provided by an anonymous donor in the name of the Sisters of St. Joseph and the values they hold dear.
The Thomas J. Wendt Alumni scholarship, founded in the memory of former SJNY student leader and employee Thomas J. Wendt ’88, is awarded to a student whose qualities exemplify Wendt’s priorities of service and dedication, inside and outside the classroom. Frascogna, a proud contributor to both the University and local community while upholding a 3.9 GPA, graciously accepted the honor.
“I really value and see my experience here as something we have all accomplished together. Being student government president, I’ve gotten to work with everybody and it’s been a great experience. We brought campus back from COVID and now have campus life again, we have big events and clubs back on campus,” said Franscogna.
Lisa Galasso-Werner ’08, M.S. ’13, MBA ’13, director of development of consortium giving at SJNY, presented Frascogna with the awards.
The luncheon was closed with a benediction delivered by Johnathan Galo, director of campus ministry.
