In less than two months, the DJ Schiulaz ’10 Memorial Scholarship has received over $11,000 in donations from friends, family and former St. Joseph’s College classmates eager to support a great cause and honor a great alumnus.
The scholarship, created by 11 alumni who wished to celebrate the life of their friend and fellow alumnus DJ Schiulaz, kicked off its fundraising virtually on June 30, and hosted an in-person “Dine to Donate” event at Rhum in Patchogue a week later.
The campaign has since seen an outpouring of love, including a $500 anonymous donation from someone who never met DJ, as well a $1,000 donation from Lauren Shaw-Bartalomy ’10 and Brian Bartalomy.
“Your wings were ready, our hearts were not,” Shaw-Bartalomy wrote on the fundraising page. “We cannot wait for this scholarship to help keep your legacy alive. Love you DJ.”
Steve Hoffman ’09 said the scholarship was a “great way to honor one of the best friends” he ever had.
Associate Director of Alumni Engagement Lisa Galasso ’08, M.S./MBA ’13, a friend of DJ’s and one of the scholarship committee members, is thrilled to see so many people honoring DJ’s memory and supporting his legacy.
“We have five years to reach our $25,000 goal, to establish a scholarship in honor of a great alumnus, and we’ve already reached more than 40% in only two months,” Galasso said. “I am so proud of our dedicated committee members and our scholarship supporters for reaching this milestone, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.”
