To honor former biology professor, Mohammad Rana, Ph.D., the Biology Club and Sustainability Committee hosted the 4th annual Dr. Rana and Biology Club seminar on the Long Island Campus on November 20.
In addition, the event also marked the 10 year anniversary of the Town of Brookhaven declaring November 19 Dr. Rana and Biology Club Day.
Faculty, students and Dr. Rana attended the event with the New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC). Program Coordinator Emma Hahn served as the guest speaker who gave a presentation about the rescue center and how they help sick and injured marine mammals
The NYMRC operates the New York State Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program with a mission to protect and preserve the marine environment through conservation efforts, including rescue, rehabilitation and research.
These conservation efforts are done also with the help of local authorities, marine patrol and the public.
“All of the different organizations we work with, including us, have their own 24-hour rescue hotline,” said Hahn. “It is available for the public to call in case there is an animal that is sick or injured and is in need of intervention.”
Attendees also learned about what they can do to help support the rescue center. There are many volunteer and internship opportunities for students to take advantage of at the center.
Hahn encouraged students to get involved in helping with marine conservation, “Never think that just because you’re one person that you can’t make a difference,” she said.
