SJC Long Island’s women’s swim team was named as a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division III Fall Scholar All-America Team, earning the honor for the eighth consecutive semester.
The Golden Eagles held a 3.62 GPA for fall 2019, making them the 12th-highest team out of 762 men’s and women’s Division I, II and III programs across the country.
“We want our student-athletes to have an outstanding academic and athletic experience when they come to St. Joseph’s College,” women’s swim team Coach Chris Brandenberger has said. “This team of girls is showing they are great role models at St. Joseph’s College, and that’s important.”
In order to earn the honor, a program must hold a 3.0 GPA or higher in the specified semester. In total, 762 men’s and women’s teams representing 480 institutions across Divisions I, II and III received recognition.
“All the girls on the team work very hard to get the times they want and the grades they want,” said Samantha Mullman, a senior nursing major who has been swimming since she was 4 years old. “It is not always easy, but in the end it is good to be able to say we have a Scholar All-American team. Being honored for our hard work and dedication allows us to know we are doing well as student-athletes.”
The Golden Eagles also placed third out of seven competing teams at the 2020 Skyline Conference Swimming Championships in January. They opened the weekend with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay when Marisa Tutone, Meghan Skakandi, Juliana Kohlus and Samantha Mullman posted a program-best time of 1:57.74.
