St. Joseph’s University, New York is set to honor the Class of 2024 at its 105th annual commencement Thursday, May 23, at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Commencement will celebrate nearly 1,200 students from all three University campuses. More than 800 of the graduates are Long Island Campus students. The Brooklyn and Online campuses will graduate more than 240 and 100, respectively.*
The event’s keynote speaker is Dr. KMarie King ’94, M.D., M.S., M.B.A., FACS, who made history in 2021 when she became the first Black female chair of surgery in the nation after being named the Henry and Sally Schaffer Chair of Surgery at Albany Medical College. She is also the Chief of Surgery at Albany Medical Center She will be bestowed with an honorary degree from the University.
The Class of 2024 has overcome unique challenges, entering the University during a global pandemic, not to mention a pivotal period of personal and professional development. St. Joseph’s is excited to celebrate this unique class of individuals on such a joyous occasion.
Graduation festivities kick into gear with a special Graduate Celebration Week April 22-25, as both physical campuses host graduate-recognition events.
Throughout the week, the Class of 2024 is invited to celebrate themselves as part of a social media campaign, posting cap and gown pictures with the hashtag #SJNYGrad.
Brooklyn Campus Events
Brooklyn’s Graduate Celebration Week opens with “Cappy” Hour on Monday, April 22, during common hour. Graduating seniors are invited to the Tuohy Hall Auditorium to decorate their caps with items provided by the University.
Student Life will host its annual Toast to the Graduates inside the Tuohy Hall Auditorium on Tuesday, April 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. Graduating seniors enjoy an evening of recognition and cocktail refreshments.
At the event, Brooklyn Campus Valedictorian Caitlin Caporal, a political science major, will address the Class of 2024 for the first time.
Seniors are also invited to schedule appointments for their senior portraits Monday and Tuesday in the Parlors.
Long Island Campus Events
Long Island Campus’ Graduate Celebration Week also begins with “Cappy” Hour on Monday during common hour. The event location will be announced as it gets closer.
Long Island’s Toast to the Graduates event takes place Thursday, April 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the McGann Conference Center. Guests can enjoy light refreshments, music, photo booths, giveaways and an opportunity to hear from speakers, including Long Island Campus Valedictorian Melissa Guercio.
Guercio, who is earning a B.S. in Chemistry, accepted a position in Stony Brook University’s Ph.D. in Chemistry program for the fall. She received a full scholarship for the program, as well as a teacher assistant/research assistant position.
Seniors can also get their portraits taken by appointment Wednesday and Thursday.
