The Student Government Association expressed its gratitude for SJC Brooklyn’s security department Tuesday in honor of National Security Appreciation Week.
SGA Vice President Gabriella Fielding issued an award to Security Director Mike McGrann and Security Supervisor Mae Hines, acknowledging their hard work and dedication toward keeping the campus safe.
“On behalf of the student body, we would like to thank you for all that you do on this campus,” said Fielding, a senior child study major, at SGA’s first senate meeting of the semester.
McGrann said he enjoys serving the SJC Brooklyn community.
“Mae and I have had many jobs in our lives, but we’ve never been happier than working here,” McGrann said. “The students are wonderful.”
National Security Appreciation Week is celebrated annually during the third week of September. The week is intended to serve as a reminder be thankful to security officers — whether they protect schools, workplaces, shopping malls, or other places in the community — for their hard work.
At SJC Brooklyn, officers are stationed throughout the historic campus, always on their toes and ready to assist the College community in an emergency. The presence of security on campus is especially comforting to students who take evening classes, spend long hours in the library and attend late sports practices.
Deserae Sequeira, a student-athlete on the soccer and basketball teams, and who lives in the College’s residence hall, said she appreciates the security presence on campus.
“St. Joe’s was my first college choice, and I immediately felt safe and at home,” said Sequeira, a junior business administration major. “Campus security is always present, always accessible and always there to help.”
