An SJC Long Island Golden Eagles campaign is calling attention to the importance of college students casting their vote in the upcoming general election on Nov. 3.
Student-athletes are sharing their “I vote because…” statements across the Golden Eagles’ social pages, reminding their classmates that their vote — and voice — matter.
“Given the nature of the circumstances, as well as the unprecedented times we’ve recently experienced, our participation (in voting) is crucial,” Caleigh Capek, a junior on the women’s cross country and track and field teams, said in her “I vote because…” video.
“Through the action of voting, we are prompted to vocalize and effectuate the changes we wish to see in this world,” she continued. “It is an opportunity we must take advantage of, as it has a vast impact on our future. I encourage all eligible voters to exercise your rights and to express your personal beliefs on Nov. 3.”
The SJC Long Island Department of Athletics launched its inaugural Voter Registration Initiative Monday, Sept. 28, with the goal of ensuring all student-athletes have the ability and resources to exercise their right to vote on election day.
“We are the generation who can set the platform for change and a better future for all,” SAAC President Alexandra Ehrhart said. “It is important that we educate ourselves and others about the importance of voting. As Ruth Bader Ginsburg said, ‘Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.'”
Check SJC Golden Eagles’ social pages every Tuesday to hear from student-athletes on why they vote.
