The SJC Brooklyn community is coming together once again this month, collecting food for Thanksgiving for local families in need.
The College is collecting nonperishable items for the food drive, benefitting Grandma’s Love, Inc., a Brooklyn-based nonprofit that provides food to elementary school children and their families who might otherwise go hungry. Items needed include cereal, juice boxes, instant mashed potatoes and gravy (any kind without pork). Donations are being collected in the Alumni Room in Tuohy Hall until Nov. 12.
The food drive — an annual tradition at SJC Brooklyn — sparks friendly competition between clubs and departments across the campus, while groups strive to receive the most donations.
Last year, Students Taking a Role In Positively Empowering Society (S.T.R.I.P.E.S.), the club that sponsored the food drive, collected 82 donations — the most out of any club or department on campus. Following close behind was Paesanos, Child Study Club, Secret Steppers and Asian Awareness. The Information Technology Department also made a significant contribution.
Together, the College donated enough food to fill 115 bags to the brim for local families this past year.
