He’s writing about his favorite sport and team. She got to write and create digital designs for a marketing company. And both of them gained invaluable experience that will surely fuel their future careers.
SJC Long Island journalism and new media studies majors Justin Miller and Ashley Tyrie experienced firsthand what it’s like to work in the field of journalism this summer while serving internships.
“It’s a really unique opportunity to be able to hone my skills as a journalist while writing about my favorite team and sport,” said Justin Miller, who’s interning with online sports journalism outlet The Game Haus, where he writes about the Islanders and the NHL as a whole.
“Being able to write about my passions makes a fun experience even more enjoyable and memorable,” added Miller.
Preparing for His Future

Miller, who started his internship in June, said his favorite part of the internship is the freedom it offers him to write about what he likes.
“This internship is helping me mainly by giving me practice in journalistic writing,” the 22-year-old Ronkonkoma resident said. “In addition, this internship really helps me from a creative standpoint, as well. I have to produce new content every week, which forces me to think creatively of where I can find a good story that’s not being covered by someone else already.”
As someone who hopes to work as a sports writer after he graduates from SJC this spring, the experience is helping Miller prepare for the exact career he hopes to one day have.
“While I love writing about hockey, I would be more than happy to pursue a career writing about other sports, as well,” the journalism and new media studies major said.
Honing Her Skills with an Internship
Ashley Tyrie ’22
Tyrie served a remote internship with PS Digital, a Long Island marketing agency based out of Hauppauge, from June 1 through July 8.
She wrote articles for the company’s new blog and for clients, checked for errors on clients’ websites, and created digital pictures for clients.
“This internship helped me gain insight into how marketing works, and what aspects go into it,” Tyrie, a senior with a minor in film, said. “I loved making pictures in Canva and looking at the various websites PS Digital managed.”
The West Islip resident wants to work as an entertainment journalist writing movie reviews. Her internship helped her prepare for that by writing articles on a variety of subjects.
“I believe students should serve internships because they should get experience in their field of expertise,” Tyrie said. “It shows you what the real world is like, how to be professional, and time constraints that businesses are under.”
