Helping others has always been at the core of what drives St. Joseph University, New York alum Wissam Azzam, DDS ’18. Now working at a private pediatric dental practice in North Carolina, Dr. Azzam’s pathway to dentistry began at SJNY, graduating with a B.S in Biology and minor in Chemistry.
According to the born-and-raised Long Islander, the courses at SJNY were rigorous and comprehensive, providing him with the scientific knowledge necessary for excelling in dental school.
While at NYU College of Dentistry, Dr. Azzam served as outreach chair of the American Student Dental Association and he was also teaching assistant. Later, he earned a specialty certification in pediatric dentistry at the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine.
During his pediatric residency, Dr. Azzam served as chief resident.
He credits St. Joseph’s University’s laboratory experiences and research opportunities with helping him develop practical skills and critical thinking that he uses to this day in his practice.
“I’m incredibly grateful for my time at St. Joseph’s University,” Dr. Azzam said. “The faculty and staff fully supported my growth, both professionally and personally. The friendships I made at St. Joseph’s University have lasted a lifetime, and the relationships I formed with both my peers and professors continue to be a source of support and inspiration.”
In terms of long-term goals, Dr. Azzam wants to continue to provide high-quality care to children as well as contribute to the growth of pediatric dentistry.
For Dr. Azzam, the work does not stop when he leaves the office, also participating in outreach programs both in his community and underserved areas of the world, such as volunteering in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
“I would highly recommend this university to anyone looking for an enriching academic experience and a strong, supportive community,” he concluded.
