The Graduate Nursing Student Organization (GNSO) at St. Joseph’s University, New York raised funds for two local church food pantries, providing financial assistance needed to help the community with a growing issue.
On April 8, the GNSO presented the United Methodist Church in Patchogue and St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church in North Bellmore each with a check for $617. 50. This money will go toward replenishing the reserves of their respective food pantries.
The idea came about at the start of the fall 2024 semester when the GNSO board met to discuss goals for the school year. Wanting to help the local community and identifying food insecurity as a growing health concern, the group of future nurse practitioners sought assistance from the SJNY community. With the help of friends, family, students and staff, the GNSO managed to raise $1,235 for their cause.
Funds raised will go towards combating food insecurity on Long Island.
“As nurses and future nurse practitioners, we understand that health begins with access to basic needs like food and shelter,” said GNSO President and SJNY nursing student Primrose Wolski ‘25. “This fundraiser was a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we come together as students and community members.”
The St. Joseph’s University GNSO was founded in 2006 to support graduate nursing students, promote scholarly dialogue, and engage in community outreach and education. Whether addressing local food insecurity or supporting global education, the GNSO remains committed to making a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.
