St. Patrick’s Day is March 17, but it is never too early to get into the spirit. On March 3, the Office of Institutional Advancement at St. Joseph’s University, New York (SJNY) hosted its annual event to mark the famous holiday that celebrates St. Patrick and Irish American culture.
More than 60 guests including SJNY alumni and their families, and members of the Brooklyn and Long Island Alumni Boards gathered at Dyker Beach Golf Course in Brooklyn, NY, just below the Verrazano Bridge. Opening with a reception buffet brunch, SJNY President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D. offered a few words, as did Rory Shaffer-Walsh, vice president for institutional advancement.
“Our St. Patrick’s Celebration brought together alumni and friends in true Irish spirit,” said Shaffer-Walsh, reflecting on the afternoon’s festivities. “These occasions filled with SJNY spirit is what the University community is all about—creating lasting memories while strengthening the bonds that tie us to our university family.”
The afternoon included live entertainment from the Parnell Irish Band, well known for performing the best of traditional Irish music across the tri-state area. In between the food, drinks, conversation and dancing, guests played an intense game of Irish trivia. Adding to the fierce competition were raffles hosted by the Brooklyn Alumni Board and prizes for the most spirited guest.
“The annual St. Patrick’s Day event is more than just a celebration of shared history— it’s a cherished tradition that reflects the warmth and pride of our alumni community,” said Sylvie Brown, associate director of alumni engagement. “It’s truly heartwarming to see graduates from different generations reconnect, reminisce and want to deepen their ties to the University. Even more special is witnessing new friendships take root—alumni meeting for the first time, discovering common ground, and contributing to the ever-growing SJNY network.”
“My family and I attended the first Alumni Brunch a few years ago and each year they get better and better,” said alumna Regina Kieran ’94. “My family and I enjoy reconnecting with old friends and making new ones each year. We can’t wait until the next one.”
