Voices From the Inside. Mass Murderers and Serial Killers. The Trump Presidency.
These might sound like the latest Netflix originals waiting to be binge watched by college students across the globe, but, actually, they are three of 23 new and captivating courses SJC Long Island students can enroll in for the fall 2017 semester.
The Department of Criminal Justice has collaborated with the women’s unit at Riverhead DWI Correctional Facility to give SJC students the opportunity to be a part of the first and only Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program on Long Island.
The Inside-Out Program is a unique experience inside a jail, where a select group of SJC students (outside students) will explore through literature the constraints on incarcerated voices (inside students).
“I have felt that it is essential for students in criminal justice to have experiences outside the classroom prior to graduation,” said Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice Barbara Morrell, Ph.D., who was a proactive force in helping this course come to fruition. “The inspiration to start the Inside-Out Program came from years of thinking about teaching a co-faculty course with an English professor on literature-voices from the inside, which are the writings of incarcerated persons.”
Morrell will collaboratively teach this course, CJ 370 Special Topics: Inside Out Prison Exchange Program Voices From the Inside, with English professor Gregory Bruno. After receiving approval and funding for the course, the duo equipped themselves with proper training on the dynamics of being inside prison walls. Inside-Out will help to further distinguish the criminal justice program at SJC and is scheduled to meet Thursdays this fall from 6:15 to 9 p.m. at the Riverhead Jail.
Mass Murderers and Serial Killers (CJ 370) and The Trump Presidency (HUM 250H ) are two additional courses sure to steal a spot on any criminal justice or political science major’s schedules next semester.
Taught by Suffolk County District Court Major Leonard Badia, Mass Murderers and Serial Killers will dive into biological, psychological and environmental causes of violent crime presented by serial and mass murderers. Criminal justice students will explore in depth the characteristics and behaviors of killers in order to gain an understanding of this rare, yet extreme criminal behavior.
Moving to the political spectrum of learning at SJC is a presidency like no other, waiting and ready to be examined inside the classroom. The Trump Presidency will be taught by former U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop and will explore the current Presidential administration. This one-credit honors course is open to honors students with a GPA of 3.7 and above. It will meet Mondays from 4:50-6:05 p.m.
