A month-long art gallery featuring the creative talents of St. Joseph’s College staff and faculty kicks off Jan. 23 in SJC Brooklyn’s Tuohy Hall.
“Expressions” — showcasing the work of 14 professors and staffers from SJC Brooklyn and SJC Long Island — will be open to the public Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Alumni Room through Feb. 28.
An opening reception is scheduled for Jan. 23, 5:30 to 8 p.m.; a gallery talk Feb. 6 at 12:40 p.m.; and an artist talk and dessert Feb. 16, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Each event is free and open to the public.
A Creative Faculty
E. Jane Beckwith, associate director of the art department, and a curator of the art exhibit, said “Expressions” is an exciting way to show off the artistic abilities of St. Joseph’s employees.
“Our decision to have a gallery exhibit was sparked by the realization that many of our colleagues have an art avocation — we called it a ‘side jam,'” she said. “We wanted to showcase Brooklyn and Long Island artists and artisans whose lives are enriched by their art practices to inspire others to find their inner artist. Perhaps the next faculty and staff exhibit will be twice as big!”
Ramona Candy, director of the Council of the Arts, another curator of the exhibit, added to that sentiment.
“Frequently, I’m asked how one gets chosen to exhibit in the Alumni Room gallery — and a seed was planted! What you will see in ‘Expressions’ is a diverse collection of artwork, from painting to photography, printmaking and collage, sculpture and mixed media. In addition to Beckwith and Candy, the work of a dozen other staff and faculty members is included in the art show:
Alfonse Borysewicz M.Div., a religious studies lecturer; Jeremy Cash, M.S.Ed., C.T.R.S., assistant professor of recreation and leisure studies; Amy Gartrell, of the arts department; Lena Grasso, administrative assistant; Esther Hoyos, a Spanish lecturer; Peter Lin, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology; Alan Mildor; Claudia Mirzaali, assistant director for photography; Elizabeth Moreira, an adjunct psychology professor; Ann Paiva, executive administrative assistant; Steve Pomerantz, Ph.D.; and Wendy Turgeon, Ph.D., interim executive dean and chairwoman of the philosophy department.
