The Long Island Campus’ chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, invites students of all majors to express themselves creatively this semester through a myriad of events.
The group kicked off the academic year with a Blackout Poetry event on Wednesday, Sept. 28, during common hour. Students took written pieces of text and blacked out the majority of the words, creating a poem out of the remaining words on the page.
“My favorite part of the event was getting to share our creative pieces with each other and to see the different ways each student constructed and decorated their own poems,” said Sigma Tau Delta President Schuyler Dorchak, a senior majoring in English with a concentration in adolescence education and a minor in speech.
The idea for the event stemmed from a desire to allow students to explore their creative sides.
“I have seen on campus that there are a lot of creative writers, and we thought this would work as a fun outlet for their creativity,” explained Dorchak, who experimented with blackout poetry in high school.
A Scary Story Writing Event
At Sigma Tau Delta’s next event, students can bring an original one-page scary story or write one while there. They will also have the option to decorate Halloween bookmarks.
“I am excited to hear everyone’s stories,” Dorchak said. “It is so nice to gather after all of the COVID madness and see all of the creative writers on campus. Also, to get everyone in the holiday spirit!”
The event takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 5, during common hour in room N-111.

Upcoming events to be mindful of also include a Thanksgiving Food Drive from Oct. 4 through Nov. 21 (food can be dropped off in the English department or at the appropriate box in the O’Connor Hall student lounge) and raising money for breast cancer throughout the month of October at a table in the student lounge.
“This is close to my heart, as my mom is a survivor who endured a long battle,” Dorchak said.
