SJC Long Island students grabbed their “passports” and learned about study abroad opportunities during Tuesday’s Global Studies Fair in the McGann Conference Center.
Students visited informational tables circled around the conference room, learning about faculty-led programs for 2022 to Romania and Greece, as well as opportunities to take part in the Disney College Program and longer-term study abroad programs.
Students got a stamp in their Office of Global Studies passport at each table, earning them a special treat at the end — a focaccia sandwich or a buttered bagel.
Linda Lubranski, coordinator of Global Studies, said she is excited to have students resuming study abroad experiences after a break in travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I feel so proud to work for an institution that wants their students to develop globally,” said Lubranski, donning a special Austrian-style dress she bought while living in Italy when she took part in a student exchange program as a high school student. “This is what it means ‘To be, and not to seem.’ The College is putting their money where their mouth is and making it easy for students to go on these trips.”
A semester-long Global Studies trip costs $7,500-$8,000, with no added fees. Students may also take advantage of a freshman experience grant or a faculty-led stipend.
Ready to Study Abroad
Giana Cesario, a freshman child study major, attended the Global Studies Fair with a group of friends — who all agreed they were most excited about the Disney College Program, a national internship program located at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
“Seeing the different cultures and what they have is interesting to me,” Cesario said.
Joe Candia, an orientation leader and a sophomore biology adolescence education major, said he is looking forward to attending the science-based Greece trip next year. For the class, he will enroll in BIO 210 – Science Without Borders. The lecture portion of the course will take place at SJC this spring, followed by a two-week trip to Greece, satisfying the lab portion of the class.
Candia and his peers will gain first-hand experience of Greece’s natural and scientific resources on the trip, while immersing themselves in the culture, history, cuisine and tradition.
“It’s going to be so much fun — I can’t wait!” Candia said.
